Are you familiar with the concept of a Bookmobile? Picture this – an eye-catching and technologically advanced vehicle, fully stocked with books and media content, providing residents across the area access to learning materials. We have a prime example of this incredible feat of ingenuity from a public library and their custom truck manufacturer who worked together to make it happen!

A public library is a shining example of innovation and excellence. They teamed up with an experienced truck manufacturer to create a Bookmobile that is both aesthetically pleasing and technologically advanced. With this revolutionary vehicle, residents in the area can now access a plethora of learning materials ranging from books to media content!

Cantilever Shelving Gets a New Set of Wheels

Spacesaver is well-versed in the design and manufacture of cantilever shelving, having crafted everything from engineered-to-order (ETO) carts to manual mobile, mechanical-assist mobile and Eclipse powered mobiles. We were recently approached by a custom truck manufacturer with an exciting proposition – build wall-mounted library shelving for a bookmobile! Knowing that they needed something special, we went above and beyond to create the perfect storage solution for this unique application.

The public library required a bookmobile, which would be created by refurbishing the inside of a customized bus. Its collection had to be securely stored, consisting of magazines, adult fiction and non-fiction works, large print materials, adult DVDs, children’s films and DVDs, young adult fiction books and picture books.

After careful consideration it was decided that Spacesaver’s sloped low-back cantilever shelves with 15” depth and 36’ width would be most suitable for the majority of the bookmobile. The depth coupled with its low-back design in conjunction with the sloping aspect would ensure that books remained secure during movement or when stationary. For the shorter wall-mounted shelving units above the mobile library’s cabinetry, 15” deep cantilever shelves protrude too far. To accommodate these few small sections, 10” sloped low-back cantilever shelves were utilized.

Our cantilever shelving units were expertly painted in Spacesaver’s signature Cottonwood, Black, and Nordic hues. To further enhance the presentation, the truck manufacturer then added an additional layer of vibrancy with several unique colors.
