When local Spacesaver area contractor (Spacesaver Storage Solutions) was contacted by Old Dominion University with a unique storage challenge, they did so with a great understanding of the local company’s work and capabilities, as Spacesaver Storage Solutions and it’s local rep (Chris Canady) had completed a number of other storage projects at ODU including ones in Athletics, Administration, and the Recreation and Wellness areas.
Thanks to a magnanimous donation from a local benefactor, the University had inherited an extensive collection of movie DVDs. These 42,000 plus DVDs and videos were collected over several decades by the previous owners of the old NARO Expanded Video Store. It was located next to the NARO Cinema Theater in Norfolk and was shuttered in 2019. The ODU Dean of Libraries reached out to Spacesaver for help in preparing for the influx of this massive collection. The local Spacesaver team met with several key members of the Perry Library staff over a period of weeks to gain insight into their plans for the collection and conduct the survey work to formulate and craft a design and layout that would address the projected needs. The NARO Expanded Video collection would now be housed in space within the Perry Library, and be readily be available for the University’s students and the general public from this collection.
Among the concerns and challenges was working around the myriad of large support columns positioned throughout the space, providing sufficient egress within the space, creating an inviting space the presents the flow of the collection chronologically within the space and that also preserves the openness that the library’s staff wanted to maintain throughout the space.
The final design work was a configuration of Spacesaver Cantilever Shelving with decorative Laminate tops and end panel finishes. These designs provided a significant increase in capacity for the library’s needs, but also offer great aesthetics and functional design for users. Shelving design features included lower (waist-high) countertops on select units, lower sections beneath the windows to preserve the natural lighting coming in from outside, sloped shelves installed on the bottom rows to highlight select display videos, as well as lower units with laminate tops to highlight posterboard displays of popular videos and movies on top of some units.
Since the project’s completion, the University (Library staff) has expressed great satisfaction with the overall project as well as the experience and professionalism exhibited by the local Spacesaver Storage Solutions team.
